A trader profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January surged in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
A particular user, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other individuals also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.

A bill put forward on recently aims to prohibit government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.
