Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal toward Spectators
The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward fans during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.
Recent Controversies and Public Spotlight
This event follows a contentious offseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star defensive player Parsons to the Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his influence in building the Dallas franchise into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its recent title shortcomings.
The league’s action to penalize Jones underscores its ongoing initiative to maintain proper behavior among all team officials, regardless of their status or financial standing.
