The megacity Rises to Dangerous Haze Following Diwali

On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" level.

Alarming Air Quality Readings

Several parts of the city registered an pollution measurement above 500, which represents ten times the recommended limit set by the WHO.

In some locations, readings of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1800, equating to 15-20x higher than healthy levels.

Fireworks Ban and New Changes

Since 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous haze that covers the capital as colder weather approaches.

However recently, the current local leadership petitioned the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the ban.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a balance between "tradition and public health".

Legal Decision and Implementation

To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, judges agreed to the proposal, specifying that green firecrackers could be used during specific periods throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Several recording stations throughout the capital recorded air quality spiking around late evening to the most severe levels recorded during Diwali in at least three years.

Cross-Border Implications

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali also triggered a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing declining air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the festivities.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the city have remained as a serious issue for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.

During the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particles in the environment has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the most severe records ever recorded in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest city.

Various Pollution Sources

The problem in Delhi is attributed to a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and pollutants from agricultural fires in adjacent states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous haze that becomes contained over the city as cooler air descends.

Health and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to various studies.

These hazardous conditions leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.

The pollution is projected to be causing 10,000 premature deaths each year in the capital.
